Asian stock markets closed mostly lower Friday, with the key markets in Tokyo and Hong Kong both falling.
Tokyo's Nikkei index fell more than 2 percent (206 points), to close at 9,791. The Nikkei gained about 8/10ths of 1 percent Thursday.
Hong Kong's key Hang Seng index slipped a fraction of 1 percent (34 points), to finish at 10,691. The Hang Seng also fell slightly Thursday.
Elsewhere, share prices were higher in Manila, Wellington, Jakarta and Bombay. Prices fell in Singapore, Taipei, Sydney, Seoul and Bangkok. Malaysian markets were closed for a national holiday (Federal Territory Day).
The U.S. dollar was quoted at 134.34 yen in Tokyo, up 1.40 yen from late Thursday in Tokyo, but below its late New York level of 134.52 yen.
The price of gold in Hong Kong rose 10 cents, to close at $282.05 an ounce.
