US Stocks Flat in Early Trading

U.S. stocks turned lower at midday Friday - as weak corporate earnings reports rekindle concerns about profits.

The Dow Jones Industrial average was down 24 points at 9,896, while the broad market indicator - the S&P-500 - was down 8 points at 1,122. The technology-heavy Nasdaq Composite Index was 13 points lower at 1,921.

In London, the Financial Times Index was up 18 points at 5,183, but in Paris, the Cac-40 Index was down 15 points at 4,447. The Dax Index in Frankfurt was 9 points lower at 5,098.

Earlier in Tokyo, the Nikkei-Index fell 206 points (more than 2 percent) to close at 9,791, while in Hong Kong the Hang Seng Index lost 34 points to end the day at 10,691.

The price of gold closed in London at $283.80 an ounce - up $2.20.

The dollar remains lower against the other major currencies.
