MUSIC NEWS:

On April 22nd, the President's Committee on the Arts and the Humanities will hand out its 2002 National Medal of Arts and National Humanities Medals. Two musicians are among this year's recipients, cellist Yo-Yo Ma and Country legend Johnny Cash. The ceremony will take place at Constitution Hall in Washington, D.C., with a reception to follow at the White House. First Lady Laura Bush serves as the Honorary Chairperson of the committee.

On April 22nd, Patti LaBelle will receive the inaugural MusiCares Heart Award from the Philadelphia chapter of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences. The honor recognizes the legendary singer's contributions to the local music industry and various charitable causes. The chapter will also hand out its 2002 Heroes Awards. Recipients include jazz guitarist Pat Martino, rapper Eve and producer DJ Jazzy Jeff.

Rhythm-and-blues singer R. Kelly has written and recorded a tribute to the soldiers who are fighting the war against terrorism. "Soldier's Heart" will be released on April 23rd. Proceeds from sales of the single will go to Army Emergency Relief. The organization provides financial assistance to active and retired military personnel and their families.

On April 24th, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) will host a fundraising concert at the Apollo Theater in New York. Headliners will include Michael Jackson, Tony Bennett, Ruben Blades, BeBe Winans and k.d. lang. Former President Clinton is scheduled to appear. The event will kick off the DNC's nationwide voter registration drive.

The Arms Wide Open Foundation, founded by Scott Stapp of the rock group Creed, has teamed with Comfort Zone Camp to hold a 3-day weekend camp for children who lost parents in the September 11th attacks. The camp, which provides bereavement services to the children, will be held April 26th-28th at Camp Mason in Blairstown, New Jersey. Stapp's foundation will also send 15 parent-child groups to the U.S. Space Camp in Titusville, Florida in late July.

MUSICAL EVENTS/FESTIVALS/BENEFITS:

The 33rd annual New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will begin this week at the Fair Grounds Race Course. This year's festival dates are April 26th-28th and May 2nd-5th. Lenny Kravitz, Melissa Etheridge, Bonnie Raitt, Taj Mahal, Ladysmith Black Mambazo, Counting Crows and Wynton Marsalis are just a few of the artists scheduled to appear at this year's event.

On April 27th the 2nd annual Fan Nation festival will take place in Irvine, California. The event will feature concerts by Sheryl Crow, the Goo Goo Dolls, newcomer Ryan Adams, Jewel and Five For Fighting. Styled after Nashville's annual Fan Fair event, Fan Nation will also offer the chance for fans to meet the artists and get autographs.

BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK AND SUGGESTED MUSIC:

Singer-songwriter Paul Davis will turn 54 on April 21st. Davis is best known for his 1982 Top 10 hit, "'65 Love Affair." He also performed the role of Peter in Broadway's rock opera "Jesus Christ Superstar." ("'65 Love Affair" 7-24308)

On April 22nd, British rocker Peter Frampton will celebrate his 52nd birthday. Frampton made his professional debut at age 16 with The Herd, and three years later, formed Humble Pie. He began a solo career in 1974, and the following year, recorded "Frampton Comes Alive" at the Winterland in San Francisco. The release topped Billboard's Top 200 Albums chart for 10 weeks and became one of the top-selling albums of all time. It produced the Top 10 singles "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way" and "Do You Feel Like We Do." Following a seven-year absence from recording, Frampton returned with a self-titled album in 1994. Three years later, A&M Records released his 14-track "Greatest Hits" collection. Last year marked the 25th anniversary of the release of "Frampton Comes Alive." To celebrate the occasion, the album was re-released with four bonus tracks. Frampton is currently writing songs for a new album, which will be released in early 2003. ("Baby, I Love Your Way" CDP-15487)

April 23rd marks the birth date of the late Roy Orbison (b. 1936). During the 1960's, he recorded such chart singles as "Running Scared," "Crying" and his biggest hit, "Oh, Pretty Woman." In 1987, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame, and the following year, began performing with the rock supergroup Traveling Wilburys. Orbison died of a heart attack in December of 1988. Singer and actress Barbra Streisand will celebrate her 60th birthday on April 24th. Streisand made her Broadway debut in 1962, and two years later, won the lead role in Broadway's "Funny Girl." In addition to a successful recording career, she has appeared in several motion pictures, including "The Way We Were," "Hello, Dolly" and "Yentl," a film Streisand also produced, directed and co-wrote. In 1994, she embarked on her first concert tour in 28 years. Sold out performances at New York's Madison Square Garden were recorded for a live album. "The Concert" was released on Columbia Records in late 1994. In 1996, Streisand starred in and directed the film "The Mirror Has Two Faces." The motion picture soundtrack included her hit duet with Bryan Adams, "I Finally Found Someone." In 1997, Streisand recorded the album, "Higher Ground," which featured her Number One duet with Celine Dion, "Tell Him." Her latest CD, "A Love Like Ours," was released in 1999. It included the hit duet with Vince Gill, "If You Ever Leave Me." In 2000, Streisand announced her retirement from live performing. This year marks her 40th year with Columbia Records. In January, the label began a year-long celebration with the release of a 40-track, double CD anthology, "The Essential Barbra Streisand." ("The Way We Were" CDP-24675)

April 25th marks the birth date of the late jazz vocalist Ella Fitzgerald (born 1918). In 1938, she scored her first hit with "A-Tisket A-Tasket," a song that spent ten weeks at Number One. In 1986, the recording was entered into the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences' Hall of Fame in recognition of its historical significance. In 1993, Verve Records released "First Lady of Song," a 3-CD box set covering her recordings from 1949 to 1966. Fitzgerald died on June 15th, 1996 of complications from diabetes. In 1998, she was honored with an exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of American History in Washington, D.C. The exhibit chronicled Fitzgerald's life and career with awards, stage outfits and many personal items from her estate. ("A-Tisket, A-Tasket" CDJ-153)

Tionne "T-Boz" Watkins will turn 32 on April 26th. A member of the popular hip-hop trio TLC, Watkins was born in Des Moines, Iowa, where she began singing in her church. TLC also consists of Lisa "Left Eye" Lopes and Rozonda "Chilli" Thomas. In 1991, they were signed to LaFace Records, which released the trio's debut album the following year. In 1994, TLC recorded its second CD, "CrazySexyCool," a collection that sold more than 11 million copies and earned the group two Grammys. The trio's latest CD, "FanMail," was released in 1999. It went on to sell 6 million copies. In August of 2000, "T Boz" married rapper Mack 10. The couple welcomed a daughter in October. TLC's website reports the trio is finishing up its fourth studio album. They're working with Dallas Austin, Raphael Saadiq, Eddie Hustle, Babyface and Diane Warren. ("No Scrubs" CDP-18960)

Guitarist and songwriter Duane Eddy will celebrate his 64th birthday on April 26th. He is best known for his recordings "Because They're Young" (from the 1960 film of the same name) and "Rebel 'Rouser." Eddy is considered one of the leading rock and roll instrumentalists in the world. In 2000, Curb Records released the 11-song anthology CD, "Best Of Duane Eddy." ("Rebel-'Rouser" CDP-19164)

On April 27th, singer Sheena Easton will celebrate birthday number 43. In 1981, Easton burst onto the pop music scene with her self-titled debut album, which contained the Number One single "Morning Train (Nine To Five)." She later recorded numerous other hits, including "You Could Have Been With Me," "The Lover In Me" and her 1983 Top Ten duet with Kenny Rogers, "We've Got Tonight." Last year, Easton performed in Las Vegas with David Cassidy in the Broadway-style show "At The Copa." Easton's 2000 album, "Fabulous," is a collection of dance cover songs, released only in the United Kingdom. ("Morning Train (Nine To Five)" CDP-7378)

AWARDS PRESENTATIONS/WINNERS:

The Gospel Music Association will present its 33rd annual Dove Awards on April 25th in Nashville, Tennessee. Professional football player Kurt Warner and gospel star Yolanda Adams will host the ceremony. This year's leading nominees include Steven Curtis Chapman, Nicole C. Mullen, Toby McKeehan, Rebecca St. James, Third Day, Michael W. Smith and Kirk Franklin. Awards will be handed out in 41 categories. Winners are chosen by the Gospel Music Association's 5,000 members. The ceremony gets its national network debut with a live broadcast on PAX-TV.

The 2002 Juno Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Grammys, were presented on April 14th. This year's top winners were jazz singer/pianist Diana Krall and rock band Nickelback. Krall took home the Best Artist honor and the Best Album and Best Vocal Jazz Album awards for "The Look of Love." Nickelback received the Best Group and Best Single awards for "How You Remind Me." Other winners included Shaggy (Best-Selling International Album for "Hotshot"), David Usher (Best Pop Album for "Morning Orbit"), Carolyn Dawn Johnson (Best Country Artist), Glenn Lewis (Best R&B/Soul Recording for "Don't You Forget It"), and Daniel Lanois, who received the Jack Richardson Best Producer award. Lanois was also inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame.

TOUR DATES/INFORMATION:

On April 27th, Latin pop star Enrique Iglesias will kick off a European concert tour in Lisbon, Portugal. The trek is in support of his latest album, "Escape." Shows are also scheduled throughout the U.K., Germany, Ireland, Switzerland, the Netherlands and France.

FACTS FROM THE PAST AND SUGGESTED MUSIC:

4/21/90 - Paul McCartney earned a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for the largest paid attendance at a public event. He performed before 184,000 people in Rio de Janeiro, breaking the previous record of 175,000, which was set by Frank Sinatra in 1980. The concert was part of McCartney's world tour that began in September of 1989 and was voted International Tour of the Year by Performance Magazine. 4/22/69 The late John Lennon changed his middle name from Winston to Ono. On the same day, Paul McCartney and Lennon recorded "The Ballad of John and Yoko." ("The Ballad of John and Yoko" CDP-536)

4/22/78 - Reggae legend Bob Marley headlined the "One Love" peace concert in Kingston, Jamaica. 30,000 people were in attendance and proceeds benefited the unemployed. ("One Love" CDP-4800)

4/23/65 - The Four Tops' first Number One single, "I Can't Help Myself," was released. Future hits for the Motown group included "It's The Same Old Song," "Reach Out I'll Be There" and "Ain't No Woman (Like The One I've Got)." ("I Can't Help Myself" CDP-271)

4/25/56 - Elvis Presley scored his first Number One hit with "Heartbreak Hotel," which also became his first million-selling record. ("Heartbreak Hotel" CDP-904)
