MUSIC NEWS:
On April 14th, Aerosmith will be honored as the second mtvICON. Artists scheduled to sing Aerosmith songs at the event include Shakira, Pink, Kid Rock, Ja Rule, Sum-41, Papa Roach and Train. Last year's honoree, Janet Jackson, will open the show with some remarks and Aerosmith is scheduled to take the stage at the end of the celebration. MTV will tape the program for broadcast on April 17th.
This week, (week ending April 20th), 21-year-old rhythm-and-blues newcomer Ashanti enters Billboard's Top 200 Albums and Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts at Number One with her self-titled debut collection. The set sold more than five hundred thousand copies its first week of release. This week, Ashanti's first single, "Foolish," climbs two rungs to Number One on Billboard's Hot 100 Singles chart. It also remains in the top spot of the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Singles chart for the fourth consecutive week.
A tribute to Willie Nelson will take place on April 14th at Nashville's Ryman Auditorium. The salute will include appearances by Dave Matthews, the Dixie Chicks, Keith Richards, Vince Gill, Lee Ann Womack, matchbox twenty's Rob Thomas, Emmylou Harris, Brian McKnight, and others. Mark Knopfler and his band will back the guest artists. The tribute will air May 6th on the A&E cable network.
On April 16th, A&M Records will release Sheryl Crow's first new album in more than three years. "C'mon C'mon" features guest appearances by Stevie Nicks, Liz Phair, Don Henley and Emmylou Harris. Sheryl describes the project as an album made for summer. It's first single, "Soak Up The Sun," was the Hot Shot Debut at Number 73 on last week's Hot 100 Singles chart (Billboard magazine, week ending April 16th).

New albums scheduled for release on April 16th include: "C'mon, C'mon" by Sheryl Crow on A&M Records; "Waitin' On Joe" by Steve Azar on Mercury Nashville Records; "From My Heart To Yours" by Michelle Williams on Columbia Records; "Attraction" by Paris Combo on Ark 21 Records; and "The Last Waltz" (4-CD 25th anniversary edition with 24 previously unreleased tracks) by The Band and "A Magical Gathering: The Anthology" (double CD with rare and unheard bonus tracks) on Warner Brothers Records.
BIRTHDAYS THIS WEEK AND SUGGESTED MUSIC:
On April 14th, Country singer Loretta Lynn will celebrate her 66th birthday. At age 18, she taught herself to play guitar, and eight years later, signed her first recording contract with a major label, Decca Records. Loretta holds the record of having received more industry awards than any other female performer in history. In 1972, she became the first woman to win the Country Music Association's coveted Entertainer of the Year Award. The Academy Award-winning motion picture, "Coal Miner's Daughter," based on her life, was produced in 1980. The film starred Sissy Spacek. Loretta was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame in 1988. In 1993, she teamed with Dolly Parton and Tammy Wynette to record the album "Honky Tonk Angels." Her second autobiography, "Still Woman Enough," was published last year. Last year, she opened her "Coal Miner's Daughter Museum" at the Loretta Lynn Ranch in Hurricane Mills, Tennessee. Loretta is currently promoting her new autobiography "Still Woman Enough." In it, she chronicles her rise to stardom and offers details about her bittersweet 48-year marriage to the late Mooney Lynn. British singer, songwriter and guitarist Dave Edmunds will turn 58 on April 15th. In 1970, Edmunds debuted on the pop charts with the Top 5 single, "I Hear You Knocking." Six years later, he and Nick Lowe formed the rock quartet Rockpile. Edmunds is also a noted producer, who has worked with Brinsley Schwarz, the Stray Cats, and others. His most recent solo album was 1994's "Plugged In." Edmunds is currently performing concert dates in Sweden and England. After wrapping up the tour on May 5th, he'll come to the U.S. to begin a month-long outing on May 15th. ("I Hear You Knocking" CDP-7727)
On April 16th, pop singer Bobby Vinton will celebrate his 67th birthday. Born Stanley Robert Vinton in Cannonsburg, Pennsylvania, Bobby debuted on the charts in 1962 with the Number One single "Roses Are Red (My Love)." His other chart-topping hits include "Blue Velvet," "There! I've Said It Again," "Mr. Lonely," and "My Melody Of Love." From 1975 to 1978, Vinton hosted his own musical variety television series. He continues to perform concert tours and also entertains fans at his Blue Velvet Theater in Branson, Missouri. ("Blue Velvet" CDP-17812)
Spice Girl Victoria Addams-Beckham (a.k.a. Posh Spice) will turn 28 on April 17th. The Spice Girls' debut album "Spice" was released in 1997. The collection sold more than seven million copies in the U.S., and produced such hits as "Wannabe," "Say You'll Be There" and "2 Become 1." Later that same year, Virgin Records released the Spice Girls' second CD, "Spiceworld." Sales of that album reached four million in the United States. The pop vocal group's latest collection, "Forever," was released in late 2000. Victoria married professional soccer player David Beckham in 1999. They have a three-year-old son named Brooklyn and are expecting their second child in September. ("Goodbye" CDP-22697)
Jazz-rock keyboardist Jan Hammer will celebrate his 54th birthday on April 17th. Born in Prague, Hammer performed on tour with Sarah Vaughan and was a member of the Mahavishnu Orchestra. In 1985, he recorded the theme from the hit television series, "Miami Vice." The song reached Number One on Billboard's Hot 100 chart. Since then, he has recorded several jazz collections, including "Melodies," "Beyond The Mind's Eye" and "Drive." On May 21st, One Way Records will release Jan Hammer's double CD "Miami Vice: The Complete Collection." ("Theme From Miami Vice" CDP-2395)
On April 20th, rhythm-and-blues singer Luther Vandross will turn 51. He received his start in the music business singing commercial jingles, and later became a prominent session vocalist. His numerous hits include "Here And Now," "Never Too Much" and "Love Power/Power of Love," from his Number One album of the same name. In 1994, Vandross captured three Grammy Award nominations and won the American Music Award for Best Male R&B artist. That same year, he recorded a duet version of the Diana Ross and Lionel Richie hit "Endless Love" with Mariah Carey that was included on his album of cover tunes, "Songs." That was followed in 1995 by a Christmas collection and his 1996 album, "Your Secret Love." In 1997, Epic Records released the Luther Vandross anthology "One Night With You - The Best of Love, Volume 2." One year later, he switched to Virgin Records, which released Luther's album "I Know" in 1998. Last year, he signed with former Arista Records head Clive Davis' new label, J Records. AWARDS PRESENTATIONS/WINNERS:
The 2002 Juno Awards, Canada's equivalent of the Grammys, will take place April 14th in St. John's, Newfoundland. The event will be hosted by the Barenaked Ladies and will feature performances by Alanis Morissette, Nelly Furtado, Diana Krall, and many others. Toronto-based modern rock act Our Lady Peace leads this year's nominees with five nominations. Following close behind with four nods each are hard rock act Nickelback and singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen.
On April 15th, the 2002 Florida Heroes Awards will take place in Miami. This year's honorees are saxophonist Clarence Clemons (of Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band), trumpeter Arturo Sandoval, reggae group Inner Circle and MCI recording equipment founder Jeep Harned. The Recording Academy's Florida chapter sponsors the event.
TOUR DATES/INFORMATION:
On April 16th, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds will kick off a North American concert tour in Los Angeles. The outing was originally set to begin last fall, but was cancelled after the September 11th attacks. The group will be promoting its current album, "No More Shall We Part."
"Together We Stand: The Winans Family Tour" will begin on April 17th in North Charleston, South Carolina. The outing will feature more than a dozen members of the Winans family of gospel singers, including brother and sister duo, BeBe and CeCe. The 40-city tour is scheduled to run through the end of June.

4/15/57 - Jerry Lee Lewis' first hit single, "Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On," was released. The song later climbed to Number 3 on the pop charts and Number One on the Country and rhythm-and-blues charts. ("Whole Lot Of Shakin' Going On" CDP-1498)
4/17/70 - "McCartney," the first solo album by former Beatle Paul McCartney, was released. He played all of the instruments on the album. ("Maybe I'm Amazed" CDP-23390)
4/17/98 Paul McCartney's wife Linda died of breast cancer at age 56. Linda was working as a rock photographer when she met Paul. She later played keyboards in his band Wings. Linda was an avid animal lover and vegetarian, who published a vegetarian cookbook and launched her own line of ready-made meals. The meals became so popular in the U.K. that London's famous Hard Rock Café added them to its menu. ("With A Little Luck" CDP-23390)
4/18/36 Late Cowboy star Gene Autry recorded his signature song, "Back In the Saddle Again." Along with a successful singing career, he starred in more than 90 films and hosted the popular radio show, "Melody Ranch," which was later made into a television series. 4/20/92 - The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert was held at London's Wembley Stadium. More than 70,000 people attended the benefit, which funded AIDS awareness.
