China's
leader-in-waiting, Vice President Hu Jintao, has arrived in Washington for
meetings with President Bush and other top officials. Mr. Hu arrived in the
U.S. capital Tuesday from New York City, where he toured the New York stock
exchange and visited the ground on which the World Trade Center stood before
the September 11 terrorist attacks.
In Washington, the
Chinese vice president will meet with congressional leaders before talks with
President Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney on Wednesday.
Just hours before Mr.
Hu's flight arrived, the American Embassy in Beijing confirmed that Chinese
authorities are holding another U.S.-based pro-democracy activist after he
sneaked into China.
Yang Jianli was
detained last Friday at a hotel in the southern city of Kunming. Mr. Yang is
said to have entered China two weeks ago using a friend's passport. He
apparently visited several cities before he was detained.
The 38-year-old Mr.
Yang heads a Boston-based organization, called Foundation for China in the 21st
Century, that advocates non-violence and democracy in China. There has been no
official word on his detention from Chinese authorities.
