Speculation is
growing in Burma that the military government might soon free opposition leader
Aung San Suu Kyi.
Rangoon-based
diplomats say they expect an announcement within a day or two. Reports from the
scene say municipal workers with brooms have cleaned and swept the area around
Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi's lakeside home, where she has been under virtual house
arrest for the past 18 months.
The United Nations
envoy for Burma has indicated he expects the government to soon make
significant overtures to the pro-democracy opposition.
Malaysian diplomat
Razali Ismail told reporters in Kuala Lumpur, Tuesday, that he expects military
leaders to do something big as part of their efforts to revive stalled peace
talks with the opposition.
Mr. Razali did not
say whether he expects Aung San Suu Kyi to be released from house arrest. The
U.N. envoy made a four-day visit to Rangoon last week.
Burma's labor
minister, Tin Win, told a news conference last weekend that the government
would make a major announcement in a few days.
