Factional Fighting in Gardez, Afghanistan

More fighting is
reported around Afghanistan's eastern provincial capital of Gardez, where at
least 25 people have been killed and scores of others wounded over the past
three days.
VOA correspondent
Scott Bobb is in Gardez, and he reports the latest skirmishes follow a major
clash between two rival warlords on Saturday. Gardez itself is largely
deserted, with most of the shops closed and only a few people on the
streets.
The governor of
Paktia province, Taj Mohammad Wardak, Monday called on his rival, former
Governor Padsha Khan Zadran, to surrender within seven days. In an interview
with the French news agency AFP, Mr. Wardak said scores of rockets have hit
Gardez since Friday night.
He said hospitals in
the provincial capital are jammed with the wounded, and he said the casualty
toll is rising.
Former Governor
Zadran was replaced in February by Afghan interim leader Hamid Karzai, in order
to restore calm to the city.
Mr. Karzai has said a
national Afghan army under a central command is essential to restoring peace in
Afghanistan and ending the rule of local warlords.
