A group of elderly
South Koreans has met with their North Korean relatives for the first time in
half a century.
Ninety-nine South
Koreans and 186 North Koreans were reunited at a mountain resort on North
Korea's east coast on Sunday.
While the reunions
represent a warming of relations between the two countries, North Korea
(Sunday) demanded that South Korea fire Foreign Minister Choi Sung-hong for
praising tough U.S. policies toward the Communist North during his recent trip
to Washington.
Mr. Choi was quoted
as saying "sometimes carrying a big stick works in forcing North Korea to come
forward."
The foreign minister
says his remarks were taken out of context. Meanwhile, a third North Korean
asylum seeker has joined two other defectors in South Korea. All three
defectors are expected to undergo two weeks of medical tests and questioning
before moving to a state resettlement shelter.
