Indian officials say
they have successfully tested a supersonic cruise missile developed jointly
with Russia.
The Indian Defense
ministry says the "Brahmos" missile, with a range of 280 kilometers, was tested
Sunday in the eastern Indian state of Orissa. The missile can carry a 200
kilogram conventional warhead and fly up to 14 kilometers high at twice the
speed of sound.
It is charged by
solid propellant and can be launched from a ship, submarine or aircraft. The
missile has a pre-set trajectory but a sensor on its head can adjust its strike
course.
The missile was first
tested last year and officials expect more tests before it is approved for
service in both the Russian and Indian armed forces.
The missile is being
developed in a joint venture between government-run companies of India and
Russia. More than 70 percent of India's defense hardware is from the former
Soviet Union and Russia.
