Indian Prime Minister
Atal Behari Vajpayee says those responsible for sectarian violence in western
Gujarat state will be punished, regardless of their religious
identities.
Mr. Behari told a
national business conference in New Delhi Saturday, that India's secular
foundation was strong and would weather the damaged caused by two months of
riots and revenge killings between Hindus and Muslims.
The Indian leader also warned opposition
parties against smearing the country's international reputation over the
continuing violence. More than 800 people have been killed in sectarian clashes
in Gujarat since a Muslim mob burned 59 Hindu activists alive in a train fire
on February 27.
Two people died and at least 10 others were injured in
the latest round of violence. Police in Gujarat told reporters a man was
stabbed Saturday morning in the Wadi neighborhood of the city of Vadodara.
Widespread arson spread through the neighborhood as rioting spread to other
areas of the city.
A second person was
killed Friday night in Vadodara when police opened fire to disperse crowds that
were torching shops and homes.
