Israeli
officials say their war against terror is not over, after Palestinian gunmen
killed four Israelis in an attack Saturday on a West Bank Jewish
settlement.
Israeli
government spokesman Arie Mekel spoke after the attack at the Adora settlement
near the town of Hebron. Seven other people were injured, including two
children. There has been no claim of responsibility.
The Israeli
army said three Palestinian gunmen wearing Israeli uniforms infiltrated the
settlement and spread out, shooting into one house after another. The gunmen
escaped, but military sources said troops on the outskirts of Hebron later
killed a Palestinian believed to be one of the infiltrators.
The latest
violence came hours after the United Nations agreed to delay by one day the
arrival of a U.N. fact-finding mission to the West Bank refugee camp at Jenin.
The U.N. team is now expected to arrive late Sunday.
Palestinians
say hundreds of people were killed during Israel's three-week offensive in
Jenin. Israel says about 50 Palestinians were killed, most of them
fighters.
In Bethlehem,
Israeli and Palestinian negotiators will meet again Sunday to try to end a
25-day standoff between Palestinian gunmen and Israeli troops at the Church of
the Nativity.
Some 200
Palestinians remain holed up in the church, including 30 gunmen wanted by
Israel. Israel said its soldiers shot and killed a Palestinian militant in the
church Saturday as he attempted to plant explosives near the church
compound.
Chief
Palestinian negotiator in the talks, Salah al-Taamari, met with Palestinian
leader Yasser Arafat at Mr. Arafat's Ramallah headquarters Saturday. He later
returned to Bethlehem with what he said were fresh instructions for resolving
the situation.
Meanwhile, in
Ramallah, Palestinian demonstrators clashed for the second day in a row
Saturday with Israeli soldiers maintaining their siege of Yasser Arafat's
headquarters. The soldiers fired tear gas to push the crowd of about 100
protesters back.
