The United Nations
World Food Program is warning of a disaster in southern Africa if millions of
dollars of food aid fails to arrive within months.
WFP official Judith
Lewis says the agency is already feeding 2.6 million people in at least five
southern African nations. The worst hit are Malawi, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland are also facing serious food
shortages.
The WFP says the
situation in Malawi is particularly dire. Hundreds of people have already died
of starvation and related illnesses.
The U.N. agency has
appealed for $69 million in aid but says, so far, donors have given only three
million. Ms. Lewis says the number of hungry people could double in the coming
months.
The food shortage has
been caused by severe droughts, floods and ongoing political crises in some
countries.
Ms. Lewis has just
concluded a three week tour of five of the needy countries.
