An assistant to
slain American journalist Daniel Pearl says the reporter feared a meeting he
had requested in late January with an Islamic fundamentalist leader in Pakistan
might be dangerous.
The testimony
came from Pakistani journalist Asif Faruqi on the third day of the Karachi
trial of British-born Islamic militant Ahmed Omar Sheikh - also known as Sheikh
Omar - who is accused in Mr. Pearl's kidnapping and murder.
He testified
that Mr. Pearl had called him briefly about his concern. Mr. Faruqi said he
told Mr. Pearl that the meeting was not dangerous because the leader was a
public figure. Mr. Faruqi also identified Sheikh Omar as the man who set up the
interview for Mr. Pearl on that day in Karachi. A Karachi taxi driver has
already testified that he saw the Wall Street Journal reporter drive away in a
car with Sheikh Omar on January 23 - the day of his abduction.
Mr. Pearl was
believed to be researching links between Pakistani militants and Richard Reid,
the man arrested in December on a Paris-to-Miami flight with explosives in his
shoes. Reporters are barred from attending the trial, but lawyers on both sides
have been briefing reporters about the proceedings.
