Authorities in
India's troubled Gujarat state have imposed a curfew on parts of its main city
of Ahmedabad after fresh clashes between Hindus and Muslims. At least three
people were killed in the violence.
At least 17 people
died in the state in clashes over the weekend. One of the victims was a
policeman who was stabbed to death. Some rioters were also killed when police
opened fire.
In New Delhi, angry
opposition lawmakers forced both houses of parliament to adjourn for the sixth
time. They want the government to face a censure motion on Gujarat and fire the
state's chief minister. They say he responsible for failing to control the
violence. He is a member of Prime Minister Atal Behari Vajpayee's Bharatiya
Janata Party.
Mr. Vajpayee says he
is ready to face a no-confidence vote in parliament, but not a censure vote
that could expose cracks in his 20-party coalition. He has promised to punish
those responsible for the violence, regardless of their religion. He said the
world has great expectations for India and vowed there will be no religious
discrimination in the country.
