Germany's interior
minister says he is "100 percent" certain the truck explosion that killed 11
German tourists and five others at a Tunisian synagogue earlier this month was
the result of a terrorist act.
Otto Schily made that
comment Monday in Tunis after holding talks with Tunisian President Zine
El-Abidine Ben Ali.
The Associated Press
quotes Mr. Schily as saying it is too soon to determine which terrorist network
was responsible, but that it appears several people were involved. Mr. Schily
said his certainty comes from new information found in the investigation, but
he refused to give more details, saying he fears harming the continuing
probe.
The truck, loaded
with gasoline, exploded April 11 outside the synagogue on the Tunisian resort
island of Djerba.
German officials have
maintained that the explosion was deliberate and briefly detained a man last
week in connection with the blast. They also say there is evidence to link the
blast with Osama bin Laden's al-Qaida terrorist network blamed by the United
States for the September 11 attacks.
Tunisia initially
claimed the explosion was an accident, but now says it is investigating "in all
directions."
