Hundreds of people
rallied outside World Bank and International Monetary Fund headquarters in
Washington for a second day Sunday protest policies made by finance officials
meeting inside.
The protesters
chanted slogans denouncing what they call socially and environmentally
destructive projects in developing nations. Sunday's rally was peaceful and
police report no arrests.
The protesters later
marched to the Washington Monument to join a rally against U.S. policies in
Colombia.
Meanwhile, banking
and finance ministers from around the world are winding-up two days of meetings
on debt reduction and economic development strategies for poor
nations.
World Bank President
James Wolfensohn announced a plan to extend primary education programs to every
child in the world by 2015.
The Associated Press
quotes Mr. Wolfensohn as saying the World Bank will select 10 countries for a
pilot project in June to test methods for increasing school
enrollment.
On Saturday, the
finance officials agreed that the world economy is recovering from recession.
However, they also acknowledged that rising oil prices, ongoing economic
stagnation in Japan, and Argentina's economic woes threaten the global
recovery.
