President Bush
has demanded Israelis, Palestinians and Arabs in the Middle East make hard
choices toward ending bloodshed in the region.
In his weekly
radio address Saturday, the president said all parties must realize that the
only long-term solution is for the states of Israel and Palestine to live side
by side in peace and security. He called on Israel to continue withdrawing from
Palestinian areas and for Palestinian leaders condemn terrorism.
Mr. Bush also
urged all Arab nations to confront terror at home, and added that all parties
must stop funding or inciting terror. In an apparent reference to suicide
bombing attacks, the president said Arab leaders also must state clearly that a
murderer is not a martyr.
Meanwhile,
thousands of people have gathered near the White House for a noisy but
nonviolent rally to express support for Palestinians and to protest the U.S.
-led war on terror. Speakers condemned the U.S. government's support for
Israeli action in Palestinian territories and called for an end to the Israeli
occupation of the West Bank. One speaker also denounced what he called racism
against Arab-Americans and Muslim immigrants in the United
States.
