The crash appears to have been an accident. It came after the pilot, Luigi Fasulo, radioed a distress call to a Milan airport about landing gear problems.

Witnesses told police the plane was on fire before it hit the upper floors of Milan's tallest skyscraper-the Pirelli building.

The pilot took off in his single-engine plane from the southern Swiss town of Locarno headed for an airport outside Milan.

Authorities speculate the pilot, a Swiss citizen, may have become suddenly ill or disoriented when a fire broke out on board.

A newspaper quotes the pilot's son, Marco, as saying his father may have committed suicide because of despair over financial problems. But Mr. Fasulo's nephew, Luigi Fasulo, told Italian state television there was no willful intent by his uncle to crash into the building.

The crash left holes on both sides of the slim skyscraper as debris, including glass and twisted metal littered the ground below.
