Israeli troops and tanks swept into two West Bank villages as Secretary of State Colin Powell was winding up his peace mission.

One Palestinian was killed during the operations into Bal'a, east of Tulkarm, and in Silat al-Harthiyah, northwest of Jenin.

Palestinian witnesses say the Israeli tanks fired at a Palestinian security force building in Bal'a and began house-to-house searches. The Israeli army said the operations were aimed at seizing wanted militants. Israeli forces also sealed the Palestinian area of Issawiyeh in East Jerusalem overnight and searched homes. Two people were detained before the curfew was lifted at mid-morning.
