German police have released a man suspected of having links with last week's Tunisian synagogue blast because of lack of evidence.

German authorities say questioning and a search of the man's apartment turned up no compelling evidence of wrongdoing. He was arrested Monday after a tip from Tunisian authorities indicated he had been on the phone with the driver of the gas-laden truck shortly before it exploded last week.

The blast killed 16 people, including the driver. Tunisian authorities now say they consider him a suspect.

The Tunisian government previously had insisted that Thursday's explosion at the El Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba was an accident. El Ghriba is North Africa's oldest Jewish shrine.

Two London-based Arab newspapers Tuesday reported they had received claims of responsibility for the Tunisian blast from a group calling itself the Islamic Army for the Liberation of the Holy Sites.

Some information for this report provided by AP and AFP.
