April 2002 Editorial Hate and Terrorism Throughout history there has been many instances of the oppressed and the oppressor. When one nation or culture or religion or person imposes their will upon another then that nation, culture, religion or person is an oppressor. The person, nation of persons, culture of persons, religion of persons so subjugated is the oppressed. The word person is important when considering nation, culture, and religion because what goes on in the mind and heart of each person as an individual is critical to living in general. Within a family one family member such as a parent may feel it necessary to force his or her will upon the child. It is next to impossible to reason with some children for many reasons including the way they have been brought up and the examples of social interaction that surround them. So it could very well be the fault of the parent that the child has been reared as unreasonable and must be forced to modify his or her conduct. But it could be that the child has other problems not of the parents making such as the influence of peers and the attitudes groomed in various institutions such as school which the child attends. Just as in a family scenario oppression occurs, so it occurs in society, the workplace, between cultures, nations, and between religions. The point to be made here is that the "cause" of actions that are harmful to society at large must be suppressed just as harmful actions of a child must be suppressed by the parent. Suppression is oppression when directed by people to other people. Oppression can take many forms varying from some form of manipulation to the imposition of physical force. No one likes to be oppressed. Terror is totally different from oppression. Oppression may be exercised to the benefit of a few and the suppression of many or to the benefit of many and the suppression of a few. It may occur through intimidation, manipulation, or by force. However, terrorism, for whatever reason is a totally destructive force of the human will. No reason can justify terrorism, not even oppression when it is inconsiderate, sustained, and demoralizing. Terrorism is the wanton destruction of a perceived enemy or oppressor. Terrorism is driven by hate. The victims of such hate are often the young, the violent, and those who have loved lost ones who engaged in terrorism or were near to or sympathetic to those involved in terrorism. In other words, terrorism breeds more terrorism as it feeds on hate and the perception of being oppressed. Terrorism has no respect for the innocent or human life. Terrorists are those who murder for the sake of their obsession of hate. To have the objective of killing indiscriminantly and as many as possible is terrorism. And to disguise such acts of murder as anything else is the height of deceit. Absolutely no good comes from terrorism - which is simple hate. Terrorism cannot be justified. A common excuse for this exhibition of hatred is that terrorism is justified if it is resistance to oppression or occupation. Terrorism only brings death and destruction to those practicing such wanton hatred and murder. Of course it punishes or hurts by killing and maiming the perceived enemy. But it only builds resolve but resolve now fed by the same hatred back to the terrorist. Terrorism is simply hatred and hatred breeds hatred in a non ending cycle of pain and inhumanity to man. Terrorism is not resistance, it is simple hatred and therefore it will not work to the end of peace, coexistence, and harmony. It ends in violence and destruction as it grows and feeds itself on hate. Terrorism cannot bring peace because it is practiced by those who find themselves hating others and wishing to terrorize, murder, demoralize, and hurt others in any way possible as the terrorist gives vent to the growing hatred within. It is inevitable that if terrorism is practiced as a form of resistance to occupation or oppression it will produce no benefit to anyone, it will only provide a means for hatred to grow out of all proportions. Society, a family, a nation, a culture, or a religion can only prosper in an environment of love. Love is the caring for others with due regard to their free will and independence as well as their prosperity in regard to peaceful and joyful living. The absence of such love is not an excuse to indulge in hatred and finally some form of terrorism and mass murder. There is simply no purpose served by hatred and terrorism. It is the key to hell and if tolerated will result in hell on earth. There should be no allegiance by any culture, nationality or religion to any other culture, nationality or religion which fosters and encourages hatred and it's final form which is terrorism and mass murder. Nor should leaders who foster and encourage such hatred be tolerated to remain as leaders. Because if they remain as leaders they will continue to seed their hatred and terrorist violence until it rises as an ugly disgusting abomination over the entire world order and eat humanity alive. It is this end that the wise should understand. Hatred and terrorism are like a weed that if unchecked in its growth will wipe out the other plants. Hatred and terrorism are together the "weed" of humanity and such "weeds" must be suffocated and destroyed by whatever means it takes. However, all this said, and perhaps done, the next enemy is the oppressor. But first things first. The first enemy to mankind is not the oppressor but the terrorist - the indiscriminant murderer. However, to practice oppression is also to give oneself over to the motivation of self aggrandizement at the expense of others and this gives rise to resentment and hatred and the introduction of terrorism. When a person belonging to a culture, nation, or religion, loves themselves more than others or to the detriment of others then they will not be empathizing, forgiving, and helpful to one another. Therefore their actions will necessarily lead to oppression and finally to hatred and the final form of human atrocity, terrorism and murder. We are all missing a cog if we think society will naturally hold itself together without the kind of love practiced and taught by Jesus Christ. Man's baser instincts are not loving but predatory and violent. If we give into these baser motivations then civilization is doomed. If we respond to them in like kind we are likely to be swallowed up by the hate that such motivations generate. The problem is with each individual, their mind and their heart.
