Fire damage at the Ghriba synagogue in Djerba
The German government says it believes a deadly blast outside a synagogue in Tunisia was a deliberate attack, not an accident.

In an interview with German television Saturday, German Interior Minister Otto Schily said an investigation by German and Tunisian authorities indicates the explosion was planned. He gave no further details.

Eight German tourists were among 13 people killed when a truck carrying cooking gas crashed and exploded outside the Ghriba synagogue on the island of Djerba. Ten seriously injured Germans were flown to Hamburg for treatment on Saturday.

Tunisian officials and leaders of the country's small Jewish community have called Thursday's crash an accident. But the Israeli government says it was an act of terrorism.

Several countries, notably France, have seen a rise in attacks on synagogues amid the recent increase in Israeli-Palestinian fighting.
