Israel has
arrested Marwan Barghouti, a close aide to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and
a leader of the current intifada.
Israeli and
Palestinian sources say Mr. Barghouti was captured in the West Bank town of
Ramallah. Israeli troops have been searching for him since Israel launched its
West Bank offensive more than two weeks ago.

Mr. Barghouti
is the chief of Mr. Arafat's Fatah movement. Israel accuses him of leading the
Fatah militants responsible for many attacks against Israelis.
Meanwhile, a
group of international relief workers, including Palestinian medics, is getting
its first look inside the devastated Palestinian refugee camp at Jenin.
International Red Cross and Red Crescent workers with ambulances, escorted by
Israeli troops, are searching for bodies and giving medical aid to the
wounded.
Palestinians
have accused Israeli forces of carrying out a massacre in the camp, saying
hundreds of people, including many civilians, have been killed. Israel says the
death toll is only in the dozens, and that most of those killed were
gunmen.
