An earthquake in
northern Afghanistan has killed at least 50 people and injured about 150
others.
Aid workers say
dozens of homes and buildings collapsed in three villages in the Nahrin
district of Baghlan province after a series of tremors hit the area Friday
morning. Officials in the region say most of the casualties occurred in the
village of Doabi, 140-kilometers northeast of Kabul.
Pakistani
seismologists say the quake measured 5.6 on the open-ended Richter scale and
its epicenter was in the Hindu Kush mountain range, an earthquake-prone area.
The quake and several after-shocks were felt as far away as Kabul and
northwestern Pakistan.
Last month, an
earthquake in Afghanistan's Baghlan province left between 800 and one thousand
people dead, with nearly 1,500 others homeless.
Friday's earthquake
was the third to hit Northern Afghanistan in the past two
months.
