Venezuelan police officers separate members of the opposition from supporters of President Hugo Chavez
Thousands of opponents of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez marched Thursday through the capital, Caracas, as a general strike against the state-owned oil monopoly spirals into a national crisis.

Blowing whistles and chanting slogans against the government, the huge protest blocked several avenues in the eastern part of the city.

Labor and business leaders accuse Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez of failing to heed growing opposition demands for a change in his confrontational leadership style and to respond to union demands. Managers at the oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela, want President Chavez to rescind a new corporate board they contend is unqualified.

Now, with the crisis affecting oil exports, the government has offered a more conciliatory response, saying it is ready to meet with oil company executives to resolve the stand-off.

Venezuela exports nearly one million barrels of crude oil daily to the United States. In Washington, Energy Secretary Spencer Abraham says the Bush administration is closely watching the situation.
