Bahrain Police Fire Tear Gas on Protesters

Police in Bahrain
have fired tear gas to disperse at least 2,000 pro-Palestinian demonstrators
marching near the heavily-fortified U.S. embassy in Manama.
The demonstrators,
outraged over U.S. support for Israel, chanted "death to America" and "death to
Israel" as they approached the embassy Wednesday. Police prevented them from
entering the U.S. compound by firing tear gas and rubber bullets. Doctors
treated at least 300 people for tear gas inhalation.
The headquarters for
the U.S. Navy's 5th Fleet is in Bahrain.
Elsewhere Wednesday,
at least 2,500 students demonstrated in the Egyptian city of Alexandria over a
student who was killed Tuesday in clashes between pro-Palestinian demonstrators
and Egyptian police. The students also protested Tuesday's visit to Egypt by
U.S. Secretary of State Colin Powell, who is on a mission to end the
Israeli-Palestinian violence.
In Beirut, hundreds
of Lebanese and Palestinian women demonstrated near the U.S. embassy to
denounce the Israeli offensive in the West Bank. At least 300 Syrian and
Palestinian women demonstrated in Damascus against Israel's
incursion.
