A United Nations human rights team is headed to Afghanistan's central Bamiyan province to probe the discovery of three mass graves found in the region.

A U.N. spokesman said the number of people buried in the graves and the circumstances of their deaths are unclear.

But local members of the ethnic Hazara community say they believe the graves contain bodies of Hazara killed late last year before the fall of Afghanistan's Sunni Muslim Taleban rulers.

Hazara leaders allege that as many as 15,000 community members were killed during the five-year reign of the Taleban, which was driven from power in November and December in the U.S.-led war on terrorism.

Meanwhile, in the Afghan capital, authorities say they do not know who fired two rockets at the headquarters of the international peacekeeping force early Sunday.

Neither projectile hit its apparent target, and no injuries were reported. Authorities say remnants of the ousted Taleban regime or backers of a renegade former prime minister may be responsible.

The U.S.-led war against al-Qaida terrorists and their Taleban sponsors was launched six months ago Sunday.

The huge allied offensive came in response to the September 11 terrorist attacks on the United States.
