In a new push
for Mideast peace, President Bush has called on Israel to immediately halt
incursions into Palestinian territory and withdraw from west bank towns it has
recently occupied.
Speaking from
the Rose Garden at the White House Thursday, Mr. Bush said the "storms of
violence" in the Middle East cannot go on, and "enough is
enough."
The president
called on Israel to stop settlements in the occupied territories and respect
the dignity of the Palestinian people. But Mr. Bush also had strong criticism
for Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat, saying he has missed opportunities to
renounce terrorism and has betrayed the hopes of his people.
In making his
announcement, the President was flanked by Secretary of State Colin Powell, who
Mr. Bush is sending to the region next week as part of efforts to bring about a
peaceful resolution to the crisis.
